This novel was so successful it launched YA as a new marketing category. Written when its author Susie Hinton was only sixteen, The Outsiders literally has everything a good book could have. ![]() In 1967 one book changed everything- The Outsiders, a novel about sensitive, misunderstood Oklahoma gang members. ![]() Books that today we would think of as YA, like Beverly Cleary’s Jean and Johnny or The Middle Sister by Lois Duncan, would have been shelved in the children’s section when they were published in 1959. Some series, like Maud Hart Lovelace’s Betsy-Tacy series or the Little House on the Prairie books, followed a character from childhood through the teen years to adulthood and (of course!) marriage. On the other side, the Nancy Drew books, the Hardy Boyhe s books, and Helen Dore Boylston’s Carol and Sue Barton books were all technically children’s books. ![]() Catcher in The Rye, Chocolates for Breakfast by Pamela Moore, Lord of the Flies, and A Separate Peace were all literary fiction for adults. ![]() Prior to that, books that were about teens and very popular with teens were not actually marketed to teens. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. 17 William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge Edited by Fiona Stafford Oxford Worlds Classics Lyrical Ballads is one of the most important collections of poetry ever published, and includes poems such as The Ancient Mariner and Lines written a few miles above Tintern Abbey. Important letters are included, as well as a wide-ranging introduction and generous notes. It offers modern readers a sense of what it was like to encounter Lyrical Ballads for the first time, and to see how it developed. This is the only edition to print both the original 1798 collection and the expanded 1802 edition, with the fullest version of the Preface and Wordsworth's important Appendix on Poetic Diction. Wordsworth's famous Preface is a manifesto not just for Romanticism but for poetry in general. Within this initially unassuming, anonymous volume were many of the poems that came to define their age and which have continued to delight readers ever since, including 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner', the 'Lucy' poems, 'Lines written a few miles above Tintern Abbey', 'A Slumber did my Spirit seal' and many more. 'Listen, Stranger!' Wordsworth and Coleridge's joint collection of poems has often been singled out as the founding text of English Romanticism. ![]() ![]() ![]()
![]() ![]() As a Jersey girl myself, I loved the 1930s, NYC setting, and found the happy (but let me say, very open) ending refreshing in a work of literary fiction. And how are they going to fix it? It was a great plot and had steady but realistic pacing. “Relearning you has been the best thing that’s ever happened to me.” We know there is, or at least was a foundation of love there and for me it made all the difference. I thought this was very clever as although we are presented with a couple that appear to hate each other and are constantly trading jabs. Cut to the present day and they are engaged, but with every passing day they despise each other more. Here we meet Naomi and Nicholas on one of their first dates, full of hope for the future and smitten with each other. ![]() “Enjoy your Thanksgiving!” he calls over his shoulder. ![]() The main thing I think I enjoyed here was the different on premise from your typical hate to love novel.
